The Most Holy Face of Jesus is the title for certain images that Catholics believe are miraculously shaped depictions of the face of Jesus Christ.

Photograph negative of the Turin cloth from 1898.
Walenty Wamkowicz: Jesus’ Crown of Thorns.
The Shroud of Turin is the name for one of the most famous Christian relics, and it represents a narrow piece of linen cloth on which the outline of a man’s body can be recognized, including the Most Holy Face of Jesus. The painting obtained from the Shroud of Turin is associated with a special medal and is also one of the Catholic devotions to Christ.
Various acheiropoieta (literally “non-handmade”, “not made by human hands”) sacred images and objects relating to Jesus Christ have been recorded over the centuries, and devotions to the Most Holy Face of Jesus have been practiced. This devotion was approved by Pope Leo XIII. 1895 and Pope Pius XII. 1958.
In the Roman Catholic tradition, the Most Holy Person of Jesus is used together with acts of pleasure to Jesus Christ [3] in certain religious communities whose focus is such pleasure, e.g. The Pontifical Congregation of the Benedictine Sisters of the Pleasure of the Blessed Virgin. In his address to this Congregation, Pope John Paul II. he called such acts of pleasure “a continual effort to stand by the endless crosses on which the Son of God continues to be crucified.”
Belief in the existence of authentic images of the Most Holy Face of Jesus is connected with the old legend of Mandilion. This is the name for the canvas on which, according to tradition, the figure of Jesus miraculously appeared in the city of Edessa and which represented the first icon in the history of Christianity, or a model for the later depiction of Jesus.
The oldest and most famous of the images of the Most Holy Face of Jesus was called “vera icon” (Croatian true image), which became known in ordinary language as “Veronica”. According to tradition, St. Veronica met Jesus on the Via Dolorosa on her way to Calvary. When she paused to wipe the blood and sweat from his face with her veil, his image was imprinted on the fabric. The story in its present form was recorded only in the Middle Ages. The event is marked by the sixth station of the Way of the Cross: Veronica gives Jesus a handkerchief.
In 1844, Sister Marie of St. Peter, a Carmelite nun in Tours, France, reported an internal speech in which Jesus told her, “Those who will consider the wounds on My Face here on earth will observe it brightly in heaven.” [5] She later reported on further “communications”, as she called them, with Jesus and the Virgin Mary in which she was called to spread devotion to the Most Holy Person of Jesus, in compensation for the many insults Jesus suffered in his suffering. Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus began to spread among Roman Catholics in France.
Thérèse Martin of Lisieux was a French nun who received a Carmelite habit in 1889 and later became known under the religious name “Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face”. She was introduced to the devotion of the Holy Face by her sister Pauline, the nun Agnes of Jesus. Teresa wrote many prayers to express her devotion to the Holy Face.
